NEWS: Twitter to get detailed visual streams

Because 140 characters sometimes just isn't enough

Twitter has been testing out a new feature for its desktop platform - Twitter Media.

Twitter Media lets you see videos and pictures within a tweet, without the need to exit to a separate site such as Twitpic.

Videos and photos are already shown within the timeline on Twitter's official iOS and Android apps but, at present, only links are shown within tweets on Twitter's own website.

Mashable spotted the option to turn on in-line media within the settings on its Twitter account, but no sooner had Mashable begun to write about the option than the company had withdrawn it.

The social media blog did receive a message from Twitter stating that Twitter Media was being trialled though:

"We’re constantly exploring features and settings. What you saw was a small test of a potential consumption setting for inline media".

It makes sense for Twitter to add this feature. When the micro-blogging site first took off, people were happy with their 140 characters, but as the service has grown into the humongous entity it now is, people want more.

They want pics, they want videos and that is why services like Tweet Deck and Twitterrific have proved to be so popular - because links to pictures and video hosting sites are shown within the client, and links to tweeter's own media are automatically created as well, without the need to ever exit.

There's no news as of yet as to when Twitter Media will be going live for real, but we'll keep our eyes peeled and let you know as soon as it does.

The Business Insider recently re-posted an article written by someone who was reflecting on the freedom she felt a few days after having deleted Twitter (apps) and Tumblr off of her smart phone. With poetic fluidity and refreshing honesty she writes: "I did it for the sake of my own brain and for the sake of the people I pit against the internet every single time I check my phone while in their company. Nothing new here. But it also feels surprisingly good to witness the evolution of thoughts and feelings for the first time in what seems like forever; I had forgotten that thoughts and feelings actually grow more complex if you just stop documenting their earliest iterations." Look, everyone needs a break. The writer's situation is more about removing the temptation to Tweet and blog in-the-moment, on-the-go, about every single thought that comes to her mind and the moment it arrives. That I get. I also think this piece touches on a larger issue, something I'm reading between the lines that a lot of people feel but not many people fess up to: Twitter Fatigue.

Incredible visualisation based on 3 years of tweets

We love a good infographic. We loved the Twitter World Cup one and we love this "Pulse of the Nation" one just as much.

Clever bods from Northeastern University and Harvard University have analysed tweets from September 2006 to August 2009 - over 300 million in total - to create these incredible density-preserving cartograms.

These cartograms are maps that use tweet volumes to demonstrate land area, providing hot spots where more tweeting is being done and making areas appear larger than they actually are.

Along with data mashed in from the Census Bureau and Google Maps, the words used within the tweets are deciphered against a word list to associate moods to the display.

The result is this brilliant time-lapse video which shows how the moods of tweeters in the US changes over the course of a day and week.

The results show that there is a mid-week slump - Thursday afternoons are a low point - and, not surprisingly, people are happiest on Saturday evenings. Day-wise, people are most happy during early mornings (?!?) as well as in the evenings.

When you can’t update your profile photo, send a Tweet, or even sign on to Twitter, it’s frustrating. We know that, and we’ve had too many of these issues recently.

As we said last month, we are working on long-term solutions to make Twitter a more reliable and stable platform. It’s our number one priority. The bulk of our engineering efforts are currently focused on this issue, and we have moved resources from other projects to focus on it.

[Feature]: When you go to retweet an official retweet, it doesn't look like a chain retweet any more so you get a better feel of what is happening.

It seems Google wasn't the only thing we turned to when the World Cup was on.

That little service you might of heard of called Twitter?did rather well it seems, with plenty of us turning to the micro-blogging service to have our say on that goal or red card.

Twitter has released a rather nifty infographic of how we used Twitter while the tournament was on. Not surprisingly gems to take away from the graphic are that the World Cup final represented the largest period of sustained activity for an event in Twitter’s history.

According to Twitter, throughout the match tweets-per-second (TPS) were much higher than average: during the game’s final 15 minutes, this jumped to more than 2000 TPS. (Spain’s winning goal in the final scored a 3051 TPS.)

Other factoids to bore your mates with include the fact that during the final people from 172 countries tweeted in 27 different languages, and at the moment of the winning goal, people from 81 countries tweeted in 23 different languages.

The graphic above shows how fans’ use of hashflags (like #esp or #usa) during the tournament with a background of TPS over the same period.
