Stamford, CONN — July 7, 2010 — Cengage Learning, a leading global provider of innovative teaching, learning and research solutions, today announced that the company will consolidate its business units into one streamlined operating group, a new structure that will allow for greater synergies, more focused technology investments and increased innovation both domestically and internationally. The move brings together the company’s Academic and Professional Group (APG), including such well-known brands as South-Western, Delmar, Wadsworth and Brooks/Cole, with the market leading library/reference group, Gale, and the company’s international operations. FaviconGale Supports ALA Rally on Capitol Hill 25 Jun 2010, 11:35 am

Farmington Hills, Mich., June 25, 2010 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, is proud to support the American Library Association as its members hold a rally for libraries on June 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. ET, on the U.S. Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C.

“Gale is proud to continue our library advocacy mission and support this important event,” said Tina Creguer, Gale’s vice president of marketing communications. “Many of our staff plan on attending the rally, and Gale is providing the ‘Vote For Libraries’ t-shirts being distributed onsite. We encourage everyone at the conference — librarians and vendors alike — to make their voices heard and join us at the Capitol on Tuesday, the final day of the ALA Annual Conference.”

The bus service Gale has long provided for conference attendees at ALA will extend to that morning. There will be bus service from the convention center to Union Station, (walking distance to the Capitol) and back, running from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

More than one thousand librarians from across the country are expected to join together for this event. The rally is open to the public and will feature speakers including best-selling young adult author Lauren Myracle, U.S. Rep. Vern Ehlers (MI-3), U.S. Rep. Grijalva (AZ-7), Sen. Jack Reed (RI), and ALA President Camila Alire.

Those attending are also encouraged to meet with their legislators to share with them the importance of libraries. “As communities face economic difficulties, the local library is more valuable than ever – with tangible services that support the community,” said Creguer. “We want legislators to know that a down economy is not the time to cut library funding. Support is more critical now than ever before. In addition to providing books, computers and other information resources that support students and families, services have expanded to include assistance with employment searches, creating resumes, teaching how to apply for a job online and so much more.”

For more information about the event, go to www.ala.org/lad.

FaviconGale and Library Journal Name Columbus Metropolitan Library 2010 Library of the Year 25 Jun 2010, 11:35 am

Farmington Hills, Mich., June 25, 2010 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, and Library Journal magazine will present Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) with $10,000 for winning the 2010 Library of the Year award, an annual award recognizing the library that best demonstrates commitment to library services and programs that can be emulated by others. In addition to the monetary award, which will be presented at a reception during the American Library Association Annual Conference, Columbus Metropolitan Library was featured on the cover of the June 15, 2010 issue of Library Journal.

With 21 branches and one operations center, Columbus Metropolitan Library has been serving central Ohio for more than 135 years. Through extensive customer research, CML has gained a keen understanding of customer behavior. This knowledge is the basis of a well-developed strategic plan which has guided the library system through good and bad economic times.

What sets Columbus Metropolitan Library apart is its innovative programming. Children, parents and caregivers benefit from the work of the Ready to Read Corps which organizes on-the-spot mini-workshops within the community to introduce pre-reading skills, circulate books and issue library cards. Homework Help Centers are set up in 18 Columbus branches, serving nearly 40,000 students in 2009, and plans are underway to open centers in the three remaining branches by mid-2011. The CML Job Centers help with skill development, job research and intensive one-on-one guidance. Through these programs and many others, Columbus Metropolitan Library provides tools to enrich the lives of those within its community.

“At Gale, we make it part of our daily worklife to support libraries. The Library of the Year program is a natural extension of that commitment,” said Patrick C. Sommers, president of Gale. “Each year we are impressed by the important work libraries are doing in their communities, and this year is no exception, as we recognize Columbus Metropolitan Library as the Library of the Year recipient. The progressive planning, the commitment of its staff and administration, and the important community outreach efforts are all to be applauded. We are proud to recognize Columbus Metropolitan Library for its hard work, innovation and ability to explore new and exciting ways to serve the Columbus community.”

“As far as Columbus Metropolitan Library is concerned, three is a charm,” said Francine Fialkoff, Library Journal editor in chief. “We recognized CML twice before in the finalist’s circle, and this accolade is more than well deserved. With a levy on the ballot this coming November, we hope this award will remind Columbus citizens about all the rich resources and programs the library delivers regularly to its community.”

“This is one of the highest honors a public library can receive,” said Patrick Losinski, Columbus Metropolitan Library’s executive director. “We strive to provide the most valuable and relevant services for our customers, and they truly support us and the work that we do. Our goal is to serve as a solution to the challenges our society is facing as a whole and we feel this award acknowledges that we are really making a difference.”
