Penguin, Puffin and the Paperback Revolution (BBC)"Children's author Michael Morpurgo tells the story of Penguin books, which was founded 75 years ago by his father-in-law, Allen Lane. The idea for the iconic publishing house came when Allen was waiting for a train to take him from Exeter back to London. He went into a bookshop to look for something to read and all he found were badly produced, low quality books with gaudy covers. He realised that there was a gap in the market for high quality, well designed paperbacks available to everyone at the price of a packet of cigarettes"

FaviconBook fan reveals collection of 15,000 Penguin paperbacks 3 Sep 2010, 7:02 am

Book fan reveals collection of 15,000 Penguin paperbacks"Steve Hare, a collector of the popular series for 45 years, has more than 15,000 on his shelves – and has vowed to keep going for the final 1,000 pre-1970 titles. When the publisher made the first sixpence paperbacks available – 75 years ago this year – most hardbacks cost about a week's wages for the average worker. 'These were the first books that people ever owned. Time and time again you come across books they'd kept, cherished and treasured, said Mr Hare, from Calne, Wiltshire. The 59-year-old owns the first 2,000 titles published, the famed blue, orange and green editions. Biggles Flies Again is his most valuable, worth £1,000 – while the entire collection is valued at £40,000. The website editor is considering leaving them to the British Library. 'I've got three daughters and it would be a millstone around their necks to give them two lorry loads of books to drag around,' he said"

"The Academic Library Building in the Digital Age: A Study of Construction, Planning and Design of New Library Space is the first comprehensive study of planning and construction of academic library buildings completed entirely in the 21st century. Given digitization of collections, the dynamic mix of new learning spaces with traditional library functions and other factors informing contemporary library design, the Digital Age has not raised so much the question of if libraries will survive, but how they will survive. Stewart’s study answers this question by examining academic library building projects completed in recent years. The book includes survey results on planning processes, building characteristics including user space in each building, usage and new roles for library buildings."
